Answer:
  • The Metropolitan Railway, the world's first underground railway, opened to the public on 10 January 1863. It was an immediate success, carrying 40,000 passengers on its first day of operation. It ran from Paddington to Farringdon Street via King's Cross. The railway was three and a half miles long. Most of the tunnelling was constructed using the 'cut and cover' method.
