The Reinohl Collection

What is the Reinohl Collection?

This is a collection gathered over a lifetime by Herbert John Reinohl (1889-1988) and younger brother Albert Frederick Reinohl (1894-1977). From their childhood in London through to the 1950s the brothers filled albums with tickets and other items related to road transport operations and buses in particular.

The collection includes information about horse-drawn transport that operated before the Reinohl brothers were born and continues into the 20th century. Their detailed notes and retrospective colour drawings are an invaluable research resource for the early development of London bus and tram services.

Tickets form the main part of the collection but Herbert and Albert also collected illustrations, press cuttings, journal articles and other ephemera from the UK and around the world. The collection took on a more global outlook when Herbert Reinohl emigrated to San Diego, USA in 1921.

The Reinohls were well known in the ticket-collecting world and in the 1930s they acquired other early ticket collections to add to their own. They built a relationship with London Transport, who gave the brothers samples of new bus and tram tickets. Articles by Herbert Reinohl were also published in London Transport’s staff magazine Pennyfare.

The collection was transferred to the Institute of Transport in 1954, where Herbert Reinohl continued to maintain it until the 1970s. The albums were then moved to London Transport Museum when it opened in Covent Garden in 1980. In the early 1990s the Friends of London Transport Museum funded the complete remounting of the original album sheets into archival sleeves, bound into 180 albums. They remain in the care of the Museum Library and are now stored at the Museum Depot in Acton.
