  • In 2007, TfL decided to have just one kind of bus stop flag - the compulsory type (a red roundel on a white background). Previously there were two types, compulsory and request (the latter had a white roundel on a red background and passengers had to 'request' the bus to stop by sticking their hand out, or ring the bell to 'request' the bus to stop when on board).

    After a consultation exercise in 2007, TfL removed the distinction between compulsory and request stops. It was found that most people using bus services in London did not distinguish between them. They hailed the bus if they wished to board, and rang the bell to alight. From that point, only the compulsory flag has been used (red roundel on white background).
