An article describes the tram subway beneath Kingsway in central London, which was opened by the London County Council from a ramp near Holborn underground station to an underground terminus at Aldwych in February 1906, and extended to the southern portal onto Victoria Embankment in December 1906. The tunnel was enlarged to allow double-deck cars to be used in 1930-1931, and closed in April 1952. The article describes the subway's engineering and geography, the all-metal vehicles used for fire safety reasons, other safety measures, and the unsuccessful proposal in the 1930s to convert the subway for trolleybus operation. After the subway was closed, the southern section was converted into a road traffic underpass from the southern end of Kingsway to Waterloo Bridge, while the disused northern section is open for occasional public tours.
